Young Rider

Medium: Pastel
"Young Rider" was a commissioned portrait of the Beland family's granddaughter on their ole' pony "Oliver". In 1997, I had started setting up my craft table at the dressage shows the farm hosted. I would often see their granddaughter who insisted on having a pony ride whenever she was there at the farm. They would brush up "Oliver" and bring him down to the field where she would get on for a ride. Sometimes she would get hot and would want to get down. Yet a few minutes later she'd want "Up" again. She was 3 years old. I thought "Oliver" was a very cute white pony, but more so very patient and careful. Especailly when she was on his back. What a perfect perch for a young girl to have.

Sadly "Oliver" apparently was in his 30's (senior for horses) and was getting on in years and feeling it. They commisioned me to do a protrait of him so they would have something special to remember him. A number of months later, he passed away. He is surely up in Horsey Heaven. Yet each one of us has some wonderful memories of his life.
