"Dressage" is the horse discipline of training a horse to carry a rider and move with
confidence from the beginning stages to the more advanced moves. I was introduced to
Dressage through my riding instructor. She trained and showed her horse at dressage shows.
I often went to see her ride and was intrigued with the discipline. In some of my lessons
we would go over some of the requirements and I learned a lot. One of the things that
interested me was that when judged in a dressage "test", (a series of patterns to complete
in each gait) a rider was not just scored and posted with a ribbon, but the judges
comments and suggestions were written down for the rider's information, so there was no
confusion why one got the score they got. But besides the informational input, I was taken
even more by the Art of Horse and Rider. Watching a Grand Prix test is like watching a
ballet performance of Horse and Rider.
